International Office

From the Internationalization Center at Universidad Siglo 21, we are very pleased to see how our relationship with Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) has grown over time. What began as an academic connection has already developed into concrete initiatives, including joint research, student mobility, and Global Classroom experiences, creating valuable opportunities for our students and faculty to learn and collaborate across borders.

We now see an exciting opportunity to take this partnership one step further. Our goal is to deepen the relationship between both institutions by exploring double-degree programs, giving students the possibility of building an even more international academic experience, while also promoting faculty mobility as a way to share knowledge, expertise, and new perspectives.

For us, internationalization is ultimately about building meaningful, long-term relationships. We look forward to continuing to strengthen this bridge between Argentina and Brazil and creating new opportunities to learn and grow together.

Student Exchange Coordinator

Our collaboration with the Universidade Estadual de Campinas has made a significant contribution to strengthening the internationalization of our institutions, particularly through student exchange programmes. These mobility experiences enrich students’ academic training, foster intercultural understanding, and create personal and professional ties that extend well beyond the period of study abroad.

Looking to the future, we hope to continue consolidating this relationship and to expand opportunities for academic cooperation and mobility between our university communities. We trust that the coming decades will allow us to deepen a partnership based on mutual confidence, the exchange of knowledge, and the education of new generations within an increasingly open, international, and socially committed academic environment.

Our partnership with Unicamp has built much more than joint research: it has built friendships, trust and a genuine scientific community across France and Brazil. I have especially fond memories of my stays at Unicamp and of the warm welcome I have always received from Prof. Leonardo T. Duarte, Prof. Cristiano Torezzan and Prof. João Romano.

Barão Geraldo has gradually become a familiar place to me, and the Pousada Unibarão almost a second academic residence, perhaps with fewer meetings and better coffee.

Beyond science, I have also developed a deep affection for Brazil, a magnificent country, and for Portuguese, which I am increasingly convinced is the most beautiful language in the world.

May the next decades bring us as much science, friendship, shared discoveries and Brazilian hospitality as the first ones.

In March 2024, a proposal was submitted to the “1st Call for Triangular Cooperation Projects and Initiatives between Ibero-America and Portuguese-Speaking African Countries,” an initiative of the Government of Portugal and the Ibero-American General Secretariat. The project, titled “Education and Territory for Sustainable Development Goals,” was led by the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies for Sustainable Development (IEIDES) at the National University of Comechingones (Argentina). It involved the Faculty of Agronomy at the University of Buenos Aires and the FEDIAP Association (Argentina); the Institute of Geosciences at the State University of Campinas (Brazil); the Center for Pedagogical Innovation at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto and the School of Agriculture at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (Portugal); as well as the Angolan Institute for Agrarian Development (Angola). Although the project was not selected, it fostered significant collaborative work with Dr. Raul Reis Amorim—Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Geography (PPG)—and his team. We look forward to deepening this collaboration in the coming years.

Rector

Over the years, the partnership between UNIVALLE and Unicamp has brought Bolivia and Brazil closer through people, shared experiences, and academic exchange. Our first exchanges took place in 2008, and the relationship was formally strengthened with the signing of our bilateral agreement on 18 July 2011. Since then, students from both universities have taken part in mobility opportunities in engineering, health sciences, and business, through bilateral cooperation, IAESTE, and PAME-UDUALC. Our shared membership in UDUALC has also given this partnership a strong Latin American spirit. Looking to the future, we would like to see more students and faculty crossing borders, more ideas developed together, and new research and innovation projects that make a meaningful contribution to our universities and countries.

President

Congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Alongside the University of São Paulo (USP), UNICAMP is a leading state university in São Paulo and a premier Brazilian institution for research and education across fields from the humanities to medicine and engineering.

Our bond dates back to around 1987 with personal exchanges initiated by TUFS Professor Emeritus Shigeru Suzuki. Since 2015, TUFS has consistently sent students to study at UNICAMP, while UNICAMP students have participated in TUFS’s long-term exchange and the Japanese studies program, building a strong history of student exchange.

To ensure these valuable ties continue, we wish to renew the agreement for the next 60 years. Moving forward, we hope to expand beyond student exchanges to foster even broader and more diverse collaborations in the future.

Over the years, the partnership between the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and Unicamp has grown through academic cooperation, student mobility and a shared commitment to excellence in international engineering education.

This cooperation has acquired particular significance within the Magalhães Network, through which both institutions have promoted academic exchange and strengthened links between Europe and Latin America. Our partnership in SustentNET, an initiative supported by CAPES Global.edu, opens further opportunities for collaboration in sustainability, innovation and institutional internationalisation.

Together, we have built trust, mutual understanding and valuable opportunities for our academic communities. Looking ahead to the next 60 years, we hope to deepen this partnership through joint projects, research networks and talent development, while working together to address global challenges and create a lasting impact on society on both sides of the Atlantic.

Mariko IIJIMA
Vice President for Global Academic Affairs

Congratulations to Universidade Estadual de Campinas on its 60th anniversary.

Since establishing our partnership in 2015, Sophia University and Unicamp have built a strong relationship based on academic exchange, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to global education.

In the same year, Sophia University was selected for a project supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to promote collaboration with universities in Latin America. Since then, the Latin America Program (LAP) has played an important role in strengthening our partnership with Unicamp.

As a university with a Department of Luso-Brazilian Studies, Sophia greatly appreciates its close connection with Unicamp. To date, we have sent seven exchange students to Unicamp and welcomed nine exchange students from Unicamp. Our partnership has also grown through mutual visits by faculty and administrative staff from both institutions. In addition, our Luso-Brazilian Studies faculty has delivered lectures at Unicamp on Japanese popular culture and Sophia University, further strengthening our academic and cultural connections.

Over the next 60 years, we look forward to deepening our partnership through student mobility, stronger connections among faculty and staff, and new opportunities for academic collaboration between Brazil and Japan.

A DERI agradece a todas as instituições parceiras que aceitaram participar desta celebração e que, ao longo dos anos, contribuem para fortalecer a presença da Unicamp no mundo.
