Before you travel

Unicamp must provide an invitation letter that you will need in order to get a visa. *

*For researchers and professors only: To acquire an invitation letter from Unicamp you must request it from your Unicamp liason.

How to obtain the visa

Check with Consulates and Embassy of Brazil in your country the requirements and related fees in order to get a visa.

2- The visa must be resquested in the country of origin.

Tipping

Tipping is optional in Brazil, and in most cases it is not expected, although many restaurants already include the value in the bill. The amount you tip is up to you, but usually the value goes around 10% and 15%.

Time Zones

Brazil uses 4 different time zones: UTC/GMT -2 in some islands, such as Fernando de Noronha; UTC/GMT -3 in most of the country, including states of the South, Southeast and Northeast and the disctrict of Brasília; UTC/GMT -4 in the states of Central-west and most of North; UTC/GMT -5 in the state of Acre and 13 cities of Amazonas, both North states. Daylight Saving Time (add one hour) starts at the third Sunday of October and ends at the third Sunday of February, only in the states of Central-west, Southeast and South.

Electrical Goods and Voltage

There isn’t a national standard voltage for domestic use in Brazil, but usually it is used either 110 or 220 volts. The standard sockets in Brazil are 2 or 3 round pins. Adaptors can be bought in your country and it is highly recommended to buy them before the arrival in Brazil.

Weights and Measures

Brazil uses the metric system of weighs and measures. Speed and distance are measured in kilometers (km), weight in kilograms (kg), volume in litres (l) and temperature in degrees Celsius (ºC).

CPF – Individual Taxpayer Registry

The Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) is mandatory for individuals residing abroad who own properties and investiments in Brazil subject to public registration including:

  • Real state;
  • Vehicles;
  • Vessels;
  • Aircrafts;
  • Stock shares;
  • Banking accounts;
  • Financial market investments;
  • Capital market investments.
Important notice:
The request for registration of minors or incapacitated individuals must be signed by one of the parents or tutor, curator or guardian whose responsibility has been assigned by a judicial decision.

If you rather take care of this issue before arriving in Brazil you must follow these steps bellow:

  1. Print the registration form from the following link: Form (English) Form (Español)
  2. Fill out the form with the required information
  3. Take the form and the original and a copy of the following documents to the Brazilian Consular Service with jurisdiction over your area:
    • Identification document accepted in the country of residence that states the individual’s parenthood;
    • Identification document of one of the parents, tutor, curator or legal guardian, as well as a document that makes proof of parenthood, tutelage or guardianship in case of application for registry of a minor under 16 years of age or an incapacitated individual;
    • Identification document of the attorney and a public, notarized power of attorney document, in case the application is submitted by an attorney.Important notice: the request for registration of minors or incapacitated individuals must be signed by one of the parents or tutor, curator or guardian whose responsibility has been assigned by a judicial decision.

Registration

The registration will take place as follows:

  1. Print the registration form from the following Form (English) Form (Español)
  2. Fill out the form with the required information
  3. Take the form and the original and a copy of the following documents to the Brazilian Consular Service with jurisdiction over your area:
    • Identification document accepted in the country of residence that states the individual’s parenthood;
    • Identification document of one of the parents, tutor, curator or legal guardian, as well as a document that makes proof of parenthood, tutelage or guardianship in case of application for registry of a minor under 16 years of age or an incapacitated individual;
    • Identification document of the attorney and a public, notarized power of attorney document, in case the application is submitted by an attorney

How to Cancel a CPF Registration

The CPF registration can be cancelled when the person that is registered is deceased. In order to cancel a CPF registration the spouse or relatives of the registered individual have to present prove of death by an official document. Cancellation will be effected as follows:

  1. Print the registration form from the following Online Form
  2. Fill out the form with the required information
  3. Take the form and the original and copy of the required documents to the Brazilian Consular Service with jurisdiction over your area.
